Introduction:
For this assignment, I was asked to create a CV, a cover letter and a response to certain job criteria based on an online job position that I wanted to apply. With 8 years’ teaching experience, I chose a language teacher position which was posted on Seek. This job requires teachers with previous experience in teaching English to international students which suits me well.
I take this assignment very seriously because for me, it wasn’t just an assignment, but also practice, an opportunity for me to get a real part-time job in Melbourne.

Dear Hiring Manager
I am writing to apply for the position of English Language Teacher, advertised on Seek. With over 8 years of experience teaching students (mixed nationalities) in China, I am highly skilled at holding students’ attention and managing both small and large classrooms. I believe these skills and experience, combined with my ability to cultivate constructive learning environments, makes me an ideal candidate for this position.
Some highlights from my past teaching experiences include:
– Successfully helped students improve their TOEFL, IELTS and SAT testing scores
– Obtained teaching certificates (TKT, CELTA)
– Built strong relationships with students and parents inside and outside the classroom
An example of how I helped my students is the fact that multiple students I taught got accepted at universities such as Cornell, University of Chicago and University of Melbourne. Most of my students ended up in famous universities in the world. I keep in touch with them by Wechat. I would like to provide further information if you would like to know more details.
Beyond my teaching experience and classroom managing skills, I believe my enthusiasm makes me a perfect fit to serve as a language teacher. Having had a lifelong passion for education, I am excited by the prospect of working alongside your staff and administrators to help more international students grow and flourish in Australia.
I appreciate your efforts in taking the time to review my credentials and experience. I look forward to having an interview, and provide any more details if you deem necessary.
Many Thanks,
Fangfang Lan

English Language Teacher – Casual
Job description:
Kaplan International is a leading global education provider. In Australia, we employee around 1000 people who work in academic and professional roles in our offices and campuses around the country.
Responsibilities:
• Teach English to international students
• Teach a class of 15 students or less, with mixed nationalities
Requirements:
• CELTA qualification (or Certificate IV in TESOL)
• Energy and enthusiasm for teaching
• Previous experience in teaching English to international students
• Working Holiday Visa candidates are welcome to apply
In response to the selection criteria outlined for this position:
- CELTA qualification (or Certificate IV in TESOL)
I obtained a CELTA certificate in July 2017 and my result is pass B (the second place among all my classmates) which officially permits me to teach English to speakers of other languages in Melbourne. - Energy and enthusiasm for teaching
I am always active, energetic and enthusiastic no matter in private life or workplace. I have a strong passion for teaching English to non-native speakers, for example, I could use my sense of humor to gain students attention when they feel tired and make my class interesting and enjoyable. All my former students think highly of me. - Previous experience in teaching English to international students
After completing my bachelor degree (majoring in English education) in 2011, I worked as an English teacher for EFL learners of various age groups and different nationalities from 2011 to 2019. This experience has enabled me to deal with all kinds of English learners. I was able to motivate students’ interest and enthusiasm towards learning English and help them make progress day by day. For example, I would use different teaching methods (CLT: communicative language teaching; TBLT: task-based language teaching etc.) to activate students’ motivation towards English learning and also talked with my students privately to comfort and encourage them when they didn’t want to study. - Working Holiday Visa candidates are welcome to apply
I have an international student’s visa and It allows me to work up to 20 hours a week.
Reflection:
I found this whole experience very helpful. As in the process of writing, I started to reflect on my previous working experience and what my strengths were in applying for the job I wanted. This assignment requires me to clearly express my professional skills and useful working or voluntary teaching experiences. Since I only have another semester left, then, I need to get into the job market again. This assignment not only gave me an opportunity to improve my writing skills but also drew my attention to the recent job requirements and prepare me to adapt to the job selection criteria.
For me, the biggest challenge was how to organize all my previous working experience and present the best parts as I had worked in several educational institutions. Through Larissa’s tutorial class, I have learnt strategies on how to connect these different jobs and found the common ground. In addition, I also learnt that I need to give specific examples instead of describing some general information since hiring managers must read those generic statements over and over again. Detailed examples can help me impress them and stand out from the other candidates.
